“My Fire Pit is brand new, why should I be worried about maintenance?”

It’s true, we could totally ignore it and our fire pit will work just fine for a long time to come. But with just a few simple maintenance ideas in mind, we can easily extend our fire pits life well beyond the manufactures warranty, making sure we get the maximum number of years of enjoyment from it. And, like anything, if we maintain our fire pit regularly the job will be quick and easy!
So here are a few tips:

It’s important to make sure your fire pit is regularly emptied of ash and embers. This will help prevent soot and embers ending up all over your patio or backyard! Once all embers have cooled down enough to touch, probably the following day, remove and put them in a non-combustible container and dispose of responsibly.

A cast iron fire pit may be coated with vegetable oil every 10 to 12 fires to help prevent rust from forming on the iron. Some fire pits, fire bowls and chimineas may require occasional painting. High temperature spray paint for grills is available at most hardware stores. Or you may also use high temp automotive spray paints designed for engine blocks. Ask your local paint store representative which paint is best for your type of fire pit.

A good practice is to cover your fire pit when not in use or if you live in an area with harsh winter conditions, store your outdoor fire pit in a dry covered area so as to keep it in top condition.

Never pour water on a hot fire pit! The sudden temperature change can actually break a fire pit or result in the deterioration of the walls.

Be careful not to drop your fire pit which may result in breakage or damage.

Finally, do not throw plastic or anything that could explode into your fire pit. Plastic is difficult to clean up is hazardous to the health and the environment.

Following these simple steps in taking care of your fire pit will help ensure its continued use for many years to come. They will keep your fire pit in excellent condition so you can continue to enjoy those relaxing evenings around the outdoor fire pit with family and friends.

So, how about lighting up your fire pit tonight?

Aesthetically appealing, you will love the tranquility as the water gracefully cascades down the decorative segments of the rain chain. A lovely and functional alternative to the common rain gutter, this 8.5 foot rain chain funnels the water from your gutters through 12 copper cups.

The beautiful sound emanating from rain chains is affected not only by the volume of the rain but also by the different types of rain chains. While cup rain chains are more lyrical, link rain chains are just as entertaining to watch.

Easily assembled, with a simple mounting attachment included that slips securely into the gutter outlet – some assembly required. May be shortened or combined with another rain chain to create various lengths. Additional extensions are available.

Because of the increasing popularity of outdoor fire pits we find the market flooded with all shapes, sizes and styles of new fire pits. Are all pits created equal? What factors should we take into account when selecting a fire pit for our home or work location? And what safety considerations should we think about?

Selection is Important

There are pros and cons to each particular outdoor fire pit, so it is a good idea to ask yourself a few pertinent questions before choosing your pit.

Artistic Fire Pit

• Do I want my outdoor fire pit to be an attraction or centre piece in my backyard?
Then consider if the design is aesthetically appealing from all sides. Will it look the part on my patio or in my backyard?

• Will I want to take the outdoor fireplace with me on family outings?
Then it may be good to consider a model that can fold or break down, or one that is not too heavy or one that is easily carried.

Patina Fire Pit

• If I plan on using my outdoor fire pit also for cooking, does it come with the necessary equipment, or do I have to purchase those items as extras?

• Are sparks going to be a concern?
Make sure you find out what the laws are from your local fire marshal. Do I need a spark screen? If I decide on purchasing a fire bowl, can I obtain a spark screen for it?

Do not forget:
Patio fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas and outdoor fireplaces should never be used indoors under any circumstances. Outdoor fire pits are for outdoor use only!

Safety Considerations

Take a good look at the area where you will use your outdoor fireplace.

• Will sparks create a hazard for dry grass, brush, or low branches of trees?

• What about our neighbours, what direction is the smoke going to go?

• Is my outdoor fire pit on safe level ground?

• If using on a patio or deck, have I considered the heat generated through my pit? The use of a fire pit pad, stone slab or bricks will stop ashes or generated heat from your outdoor fire pit burning or marking your deck.

• Keeping a fire extinguisher close by is always a good idea.

Never take safety for granted:
“Shrewd is the one that has seen the calamity and proceeds to conceal himself, but the inexperienced have passed along and must suffer the penalty.” – Proverbs 22:3.

If you take the above factors into account when selecting your outdoor fire pit, your next gathering with family and friends will not only be very enjoyable, but safe.

Whether fire is our friend or foe depends a lot on the way we treat it and our having a basic knowledge of its causes. This understanding will help us see the practicality and benefits of having a Fire Pit.

What Is Fire?

Although men had been using fire for thousands of years, its true nature was not known until experiments by Antoine Lavoisier and others in the 1700’s showed that fire marks a chemical reaction involving oxygen. I am sure that if they had put fire pits to good use, they could have figured this out way earlier! Anyway, they proved that oxygen is actually added during the burning process, although others before that had thought that fire resulted from the release of an imaginary substance called “phlogiston.” Fire is defined as the heat and light that come from burning substances – essential of course for all fire pits.

In describing the basic essentials for fire, many speak of the “fire tetrahedron.” In other words, besides the original “fire triangle” of fuel, heat and oxygen, they add the fourth essential of chemical reaction. Fire pits use all four!

It is necessary for us to understand the part each of these plays in producing fire so that we can put it to use in either lighting our fire pit and preventing or extinguishing unwanted fires. For example, to put out a grease fire on the stove, turn off the stove (removing the heat) and cover with a lid (removing the oxygen that feeds the fire). This will also benefit those contemplating buying a fire pit, helping them to decide which fire pits are best for them.

So to get a better idea of what causes fire in your fire pit, let’s take a look at these four basic elements.

FUEL: Given the right circumstances, most substances will burn or combine with oxygen in combustion, a chemical process that liberates heat. (Remember that fire is the heat and light resulting from combustion.) However, the temperature at which things will burn in fire pits, called the ignition point or kindling point, varies according to the substance. For example, the kindling point of film, nitrocellulose, is only 279 degrees Fahrenheit – not recommended for use in fire pits. For wool it is 401 degrees Fahrenheit – obviously making fire pits hard to light, and for newsprint 446 degrees Fahrenheit – perfect for fire pits. What Fuel should I use in my Fire Pit? Wood or charcoal can be used in most fire pits. Some fire pits run on gas, a great alternative. See Artistic Fire Pits for converting your fire pit to gas.

HEAT: Generally, heat is provided from an outside source, such as a match or spark, and then the fire produces enough of its own heat to be self-supporting. If we reduce the temperature of a burning substance below its kindling point, the fire in all fire pits will go out. Sometimes enough heat is generated within substances, such as in a pile of oily rags, to cause them to burst into flames. This is called spontaneous combustion. Certain bacteria in moist hay can cause the temperature to rise rapidly, causing the hay to burn. These sources of heat cannot be ignored when considering fire prevention and safety, and in deciding what to burn in your outdoor fire pit.

OXYGEN: Although there are other chemicals that can combine with fuels to produce heat, oxygen is the most common. The need for oxygen to sustain a fire in all fire pits is shown by the fact that fuels heated in a vacuum will not burn. Sorry there will be no outdoor fire pits in space!

CHEMICAL REACTION: There are certain conditions under which fuels will not produce a flame, even though fuel, heat and oxygen are present. For example, if the percentage of natural gas in air is not between about 4 percent and 15 percent, no flame will be produced; your fire pit will not go!

The burning process can be illustrated by an examination of the flame of a candle. The wax does not burn directly, but, rather, gas given off by the heated wax travels up the wick and burns. Prove this by blowing out a candle that has been burning for some time. Then pass a lighted match through the trail of smoke rising from the wick. A flame will travel down the smoke to the wick and relight the candle.

There are three areas in the flame produced by fire pits: (1) the dark inner area of no combustion and (2) an intermediate layer of incomplete combustion, composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide that gradually work their way to (3) the outside cone of complete combustion.

Why Choose a Fire Pit?

With the forgoing in mind think of how the flame of your fire pit will enhance your evening. Yes the rich tones of the patina evoke the colors of a warm blaze making Outdoor Fire Pits a centre attraction for any gathering, even on those cooler evenings. In sunlight, the designs, on the sides of Patina Fire Pits, or the actual design of the Artisanal Fire Bowls themselves, cast intriguing shadows both inside and outside the bowl. When lit, the flickering shadows from fire pits are as lively as the fire within.

Keeping in mind the essentials for fire, would it not be a good idea to take a look around your home or place of work to see if you may not be giving destructive fire a place to start? And remember – Fire Pits are a great way to control your outdoor fire.

Yes, whether fire is our friend or foe depends a lot on the way we treat it and our having a basic knowledge of its causes. It certainly is the course of wisdom to treat fire with respect, and fire pits are a great way of doing just that!

So, will you light up your fire pit tonight?

Fire Pit

Fire has always played an important role in man’s life. The refining, forging, and casting of metals, along with the preparing of food and the heating of homes, as well as the offering of sacrifices and the burning of incense, are among the things well documented as requiring the use of fire and therefore some kind of outdoor fire pit.

However, because of the destructiveness of uncontrolled fire we find that the fire pit has been in existence for a very long time. A fire pit can be identified as a surface that is lower than the surrounding area and has a non-burnable low fence around it made out of stones, bricks, metal or concrete, or as in more recent times they can be manufactured structures designed to contain the fire safely above ground. A fire pit, also commonly referred to today as a fire bowl, outdoor fire pit or outdoor fireplace, can be made from the earth, or can be formed by concrete, stone, brick or steel to create the fire pit itself, or the space where the wood will burn. This is the defining characteristic of a fire pit, being designed to contain the components of the fire at all times.

Historically, a fire-watcher would be appointed, to prevent the fire from going out, as well as to prevent the fire from theft or from spreading. Many cultures, particularly nomadic ones would cut the turf above the fire pit in a turf cutting ceremony, replacing the turf afterwards to hide any evidence of the fire pit.

We learn a great deal of information about past cultures from the remains of a used fire pit. Carbon dating from charcoal found in an old fire pit helps to estimate when a region was first populated or when civilizations died out. Also, bones and seeds found in a fire pit indicate the type of diet that civilizations ingested during the relevant time period.

The fire pit has taken on many different forms and names over thousands of years, such names as: fire bowl, outdoor fireplace, outdoor fire pit, Chiminea and we even find the Artisanal Fire Bowl. But the main function of the outdoor fire pit has remained the same – to create heat that can provide warmth, create fuel for food or eliminate excess waste, such as brush and burnable items.

Yes, fire and the fire pit have always played an important role in man’s life. And in our time we get the most enjoyment from a fire pit by gathering together with friends and family to tell campfire stories and cook food. An outdoor fire pit – with the sights, sounds and smells of a real crackling wood fire – is the perfect start to a memorable evening.
